The Haldia port is located on the eastern coast of India in the Lower Gangetic Plain which is part of a flat plain known as the Gangetic Plain; the land slope is fairly flat.[12] Haldia has seasonal temperature variations; April and May are the warmest months, while December and January are the coldest months.[13][14] The highest temperature recorded so far is 44.90°C (May) and the lowest temperature is 6.90°C (December), which was recorded in 1975. The Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Port (Kolkata) handles most of the cargoes through the Port.
Kandla was constructed in the 1950s as the chief seaport serving western India, after the independence of India.[5] The Port of Deendayal is located on the Gulf of Kutch on the northwestern coast of India, some 256 nautical miles southeast of the Port of Karachi in Pakistan and over 430 nautical miles north-northwest of the Port of Mumbai (Bombay). The port infrastructure of this port is located at three different locations along the Gulf of Kutch, which are Kandla Creek, Tuna Tekra and Vadinar.[6] The port is located 90 miles (140 km) from the Gulf of Kutch estuary or the Arabian Sea.[6]
Visakhapatnam Port is one of twelve major working ports in India and the only major port of Andhra Pradesh. It is India's third largest state-owned port by volume of cargo handled and largest on the Eastern Coast. It is located 880 km from Kolkata Port and 780 km from Chennai Port, almost midway between the two other major ports along the coast of Bay of Bengal.[3]
The Mangalore Harbour Project was set up in the year 1962. The maritime works on the project commenced in 1968. The New Mangalore Port, the only major port of Karnataka was declared as the ninth major port on 4 May 1974 and was formally inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi on 11 January 1975. The provisions of the Major Port Trust Act 1963 were applied to NMPT with effect from 1 April 1980.
